Psalm 38:9
“All my longings lie open before you, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you.”
Before you read another word, take one breath. Just one. Feel the air move in and out. Notice the space it creates in your chest—the same space where that familiar ache lives. The one you’ve been carrying. It might feel like a weight in your bones, a dull pressure behind your eyes, or just a hollow place that won’t fill up no matter what you do. You don’t have to name it perfectly. You just have to admit it’s there.
This carried weight is allowed to be here. This open ache doesn’t need your permission, but it has it anyway. You’re not failing at feeling better. You’re not behind on your healing. Sometimes hurt just sits with you, a quiet passenger in your own skin. And that’s not a sign you’re doing it wrong. It’s a sign you’re alive, and some things in life are just heavy.
'All my longings lie open before you, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you.' Let those words land. Your longings—the ones you can barely whisper, the ones that feel too messy or too childish or too much—are already open before Him. Not hidden in a drawer. Not packaged neatly. Open. Exposed. Seen. And your sighing? That breath you just took, the one that sounds more like relief than hope? It is not hidden. He hears the sound air makes when it leaves a tired body. He knows the difference between a sigh of frustration and a sigh of surrender. The weight you carry is not a secret you have to manage alone. The open ache is not a flaw you need to stitch closed. It is simply a reality, and it exists fully in His sight. You are not hiding anything, even when you feel most invisible.
So what now? Nothing. That’s the gift. No fixing. No solving. No urgent need to make the ache productive or meaningful. Just this: you, your honest hurt, and the God who sees it all without looking away. The carried weight is shared now. The open ache is held in a gaze kinder than your own. Can you be loved exactly here, in the middle of the ache? The answer was always yes.
A prayer for today
Thank You for this quiet. For the fact that I can stop pretending, even if just for these few breaths. Thank You that my sighing is not hidden from You. You hear it. You know the weight behind it. I’m bringing the carried weight. I’m laying down the open ache. I don’t have to explain its shape or its origin. You are holding it. You are seeing all of it—the longing, the fatigue, the unspoken hope. I am seen. I am held in this exact, tender state. That is enough for tonight. I am enough here. Amen.
