James 4:8

“Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

There's a word for this feeling. It's called shouting into the void. It's the echo of your own voice bouncing back, the prayer that seems to hit the ceiling and fall flat, the ache of wanting to be heard and met with what feels like silence. The gap between where you are and where you wish you could be feels like a canyon, and you're just one small voice on the wrong side of it.

That feeling makes perfect sense. When you're tired or lonely or unsure, the distance can feel absolute. You can start to believe that connection is something you have to manufacture, that being heard is a prize for the loudest or most eloquent. You can carry the weight of thinking the bridge must be built by you, plank by impossible plank.

'Come near to God and he will come near to you.' That's not a suggestion—it's an invitation with your name on it. Do you hear the order? Your movement toward Him isn't a desperate leap across a chasm. It's a response to a presence already in motion. He is the one who closes the distance. Your coming near? It's the simple, weary turning of your face toward a kindness that has been drawing close all along. The gap you feel isn't a measure of His absence, but the very space His nearness is filling. You are not shouting into a void. You are whispering into a space that is already occupied, already listening, already bridging the gap to meet you right where you are.

So you don't have to shout anymore. You don't have to build the bridge. The work of closing the distance was never yours to do. Your part is just to stop, to breathe, and to notice the proximity that has been true all along. The One who draws near is already here. Morning will come with its own mercies, but for now, in this quiet, you are met. You are heard. The distance is already closing.

A prayer for today

Here I am. No script. No polish. Just the quiet part of me that's tired of shouting. I've been feeling the echo, the space between my ache and an answer. Thank You that I don't have to fill that space with my own noise. Thank You that my whisper is enough because You are already listening, already moving. You are drawing near. I am being met in this exact, quiet place. I don't have to manufacture the connection. I am simply held in the closeness You made. That's all. That's enough for tonight. Amen.
